9-small Video game post

A recent comment by mamealoney put me in the right frame of mind to notice that Latoya Peterson (previously) has an article about game-industry labor-practices entitled The Patriarchy Hurts Gamer Guys Too. She writes,

[The overtime situation] has been the topic of conversation among female gamers for a long time – it’s one of the largest barriers to recruiting and keeping female talent in the industry. So, if we look at the solutions presented by those in the gaming industry and academia on how to recruit more women to the field, we can start to see a path for resolution of the work/life balance issue in the gaming industry.

And since this is turning out to be a vidiagame blog entry, Gamasutra and Critical Distance are running a great article by Jenn Frank at Infinite Lives, Video Game Feminist of the Decade: or, when “You” is a girl. About Valve Software’s Portal, she writes,

Because, when you spatially align yourself so that you can observe your own avatar, she is staring off to her right or left through a space/time vortex, ostensibly gazing right back at you. And (this is the horrific part), you and she are standing in exactly the same spot and moment in space and time, eyeing each other. I don’t think there’s a stranger existential moment in the history of gaming.”
